Volunteering - I Dig It!

Volunteering is something that’s always held my interest. A few weeks ago I decided to search the internet to see what was available and also held flexibility. I came across volunteering at Shores Acres Garden. Their volunteer schedule is the third Friday of each month, beginning in April and running through September, with the hours of 10 AM through 1 PM. I thought, “What the heck - I can do 3 hours of yard work!” So I did - last Friday!

I’m glad I volunteered, too. Not only was it a gorgeous day, but I met some really nice people. Some of the people I met had been helping for years. It was explained to me that each month’s focus can vary such as, cleaning out the pond, spreading mulch, pulling weeds, pruning, and more. I helped with spreading mulch and pulling weeds. The park rangers showed us what needed to go and what needed to stay - thank goodness, because some of the weeds looked like flowers to this gal!

I cannot express how knowledgeable and nice the park rangers were. If I had retained more information I would be happy to share it with you, but the old adage of “in one ear and out the other” applied in this situation.

A few take aways of my volunteer experience: take the plunge, because volunteering is a two-way street when it comes to reaping the rewards. If feels good - good to help and good to socially connect. It also felt good to get my hands dirty and reconnect with my earthy side; there is something calming about working outdoors.

The link below is the volunteer registration link for Shore Acres Garden. I encourage everyone to find something they enjoy and see if there is a way to volunteer in that interest.
You’ll never know unless you try.
I encourage doing what is right for each individual and doing one’s own due diligence prior to embarking on a new experience or new adventure.
